With a Spark: The Calgary Science Centre Story

TELUS Spark: A City Jewel

TELUS Spark, Calgary’s premier science centre, stands as a beacon of innovation and education. Established in its current location in 2011, it was the first purpose-built science centre in Canada in 25 years. Boasting the largest dome theatre in western Canada, TELUS Spark draws hundreds of thousands of visitors annually with its captivating exhibits and blockbuster shows. It opens minds and hearts to the wonders of science, technology, and innovation.

A Rich History

The journey of TELUS Spark began as the Calgary Centennial Planetarium, which opened on July 1, 1967, in downtown Calgary. In 1983, the Calgary Science Centre Society initiated efforts to establish a full-scale science centre, resulting in the transformation of the planetarium into the Calgary Science Centre in 1987.

In 2005, following a generous $9 million donation from TELUS Corporation, the centre was renamed TELUS World of Science – Calgary. This significant contribution marked a new era of growth and development for the institution.

On June 27, 2011, the original site closed, paving the way for the grand opening of the new TELUS Spark on October 29, 2011. Located on a 15-acre parcel at 220 St. Georges Drive NE in Nose Creek Valley, north of the Calgary Zoo, the new facility embraced a broader mandate to incorporate art and creativity into STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education. The building, certified by the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program, exemplifies environmental efficiency and sustainability.

Environmental Sustainability

TELUS Spark is a LEED® Gold Certified facility, a testament to its commitment to green building practices. This certification underscores the centre’s dedication to environmental sustainability.

Air Filtration
The centre employs MERV 13 pre-filters and HEPA main filters in its air handling units, which are “Dedicated Outdoor Air Systems” (DOAS). These systems ensure that 100% of the air supplied to the building is fresh, conditioned outdoor air, with the used air being exhausted outside, promoting a healthy and clean indoor environment.
